Morning sickness in women and men: causes

Let's figure out why you feel sick in the morning?

Causes of morning sickness

Reasons why you feel sick in the morning:

In children

Among women

Morning sickness in females can mean the most pleasant thing - pregnancy. It is this symptom that very often indicates that a woman is in an interesting position.

It is believed that it is mainly men who smoke and drink alcoholic beverages, so morning sickness that appears with a hangover and smoking will be included in this category. Of course, it is possible that the symptom for these reasons can also occur in women.

Morning sickness occurs not because all diseases worsen at this time of the day, but because a person wakes up hungry in the morning and has not eaten anything for a long time.

Combination of nausea with other symptoms

Nausea in the morning or on an “empty stomach” in the presence of serious illnesses is accompanied by many associated symptoms:

What diseases does it indicate?

Nausea in the first half of the day can indicate many diseases. Let's look at a few of them in more detail.

Gastritis is an inflammation of the gastric mucosa. At the same time, there is a feeling of heaviness, heartburn, and sometimes pain.

Appendicitis. In addition to morning sickness, weak, nagging pain in the abdominal area is observed, and appetite disappears. In the acute form, nausea can develop into vomiting, the temperature becomes high, and the pain intensifies.

Thyroid disease. In addition to nausea, the disease is accompanied by a feeling of fatigue, memory deteriorates, and weight can change both up and down.

When should you contact a doctor?

If there are worms, a quick visit to a specialist will help the child heal faster. After passing a series of tests, the doctor will prescribe a quick and safe treatment, after which the worms will be eliminated, and along with them the unpleasant symptom will disappear.

It is especially important to consult a specialist when all the signs of appendicitis appear on your face. At any time it can worsen and then surgical intervention will be required to prevent peritonitis from occurring.

Medications for an unpleasant symptom

There are a number of medications that block attacks of nausea and help improve a person’s condition.

An antiemetic drug that reduces the muscle tone of the gastrointestinal tract and reduces the secretion of the salivary, digestive and other glands. Aeron exerts its effect within 30–60 minutes after administration and lasts for 6 hours.

Contraindications: angle-closure glaucoma, prostate hypertrophy, individual sensitivity to the composition.

Approximate cost: 400 – 500 rubles.

The drug begins to act 15 to 30 minutes after use. The duration of the effect is approximately 3–6 hours. It is used for the prevention and treatment of nausea, vomiting, and dizziness of various origins.

Contraindicated in children under the age of one year and with special sensitivity to the composition of the drug.

Approximate cost: 150 – 250 rubles.

It is used for the prevention and treatment of nausea and vomiting of various origins, dizziness, instability, etc.

Contraindications: children under 12 months of age, intolerance to the composition.

Approximate price: 120 – 170 rubles.

Antiemetic and antihistamine drug. Intended for the treatment and prevention of vomiting and nausea.

Contraindicated for use in children under 12 months of age and in cases of particular intolerance to the composition of the drug.

Approximate cost: 100 – 150 rubles.

Contraindications: serious disorders of the central nervous system, incl. coma, angle-closure glaucoma, sleep apnea syndrome, vomiting of unknown origin in children, pregnancy, breastfeeding, poisoning with alcohol, hypnotics and opioid analgesics, special sensitivity to the composition of the drug. The solution is prohibited for use in children under 2 months of age, tablets (dragées) are contraindicated in children under 6 years of age. Pipolfen should not be taken simultaneously with MAO inhibitors and for 2 weeks after stopping their use.

Approximate cost: 850 – 950 rubles.

Rules for eating

During nausea, you must continue to eat, as hunger will only worsen the condition.

It is advisable to eat as follows:

Folk recipes

Traditional medicine recipes in most cases help stop nausea, but they do not help everyone and not always.

To better understand the topic, be sure to watch this video about nausea

Preventive actions

Eat right, don't overeat, especially at night. Proper nutrition helps normalize the functioning of the gastrointestinal tract and prevents the development of various diseases.

Morning sickness worries many, but is just a symptom of a possible illness. The cause of the symptom can be very dangerous.

Why does vomiting with bile occur?

Bile in vomit is another unpleasant sign of gallstone disease or inflammation of the gallbladder. Repetitions of the gag reflex occur every 2 hours, without bringing relief to the patient.

Morning vomiting with yellowing and itching of the skin indicates cholecystitis

Pancreatitis occurs with aching abdominal pain on the right, but lying down reduces the intensity of the pain. High body temperature, bloating, yellowing of the white membrane of the eyes are accompanying symptoms of liver disease, intestinal obstruction, and bile ducts.

Taking large amounts of alcohol and low-quality foods irritates the gastric mucosa and leads to vomiting. This is how the protective function of the body manifests itself, trying to fence itself off from incoming toxic substances. If over time it is accompanied by the release of bile, this indicates the development of serious problems with the gastrointestinal tract.

ATTENTION! Vomiting mixed with bile also occurs in the first trimester of pregnancy. The process is due to two reasons: hormonal changes in the body and exacerbation of chronic diseases (cholecystitis, duodenitis, pancreatitis).

Why do men vomit in the morning?

Nausea and vomiting in the morning #8212; Every third guy turns to specialists with exactly these complaints. This happens for various reasons. Such symptoms can cause the following disorders in a man’s body:

  • various dysfunctions in the digestive tract;
  • development of ulcerative processes in the stomach;
  • liver and kidney diseases.

Usually in such cases, vomiting and nausea in the morning act as an indicator of problems in the man’s body. Let's consider the possible reasons for their manifestation.

General picture of the process

The main causes of vomiting:

Vomiting in the morning in men can be caused by various reasons and is not a defining symptom for various disorders of the gastrointestinal tract.

Various cases of morning vomiting

Vomiting is characteristic of some psychosomatic disorders or severe emotional shocks. It also occurs in a feverish state of the patient and can occur with severe irritation of the mucous membrane of such organs as:

  • intestines and stomach;
  • peritoneal area;
  • liver and gall bladder;
  • for kidney diseases;
  • irritation of the mouth and throat.

A major role in the appearance of vomiting is played by intoxication or the appearance of infectious foci in a man’s body. The body has the same reaction (a person vomits) to the accumulation of toxic substances in tissues and disturbances in endocrine diseases.

Clinical picture and diagnosis

Vomiting often accompanies various infectious diseases, being a symptom of them at the initial stage of development of infection of the body. Such diseases include scarlet fever, typhus and others. In case of food poisoning or long-term infectious processes in the gastrointestinal tract, nausea first occurs, and then vomiting, accompanied by fever, headache and general weakness.

For this type of meningitis, which is caused by meningococcal infection, the main symptoms are:

  • stiffness of the neck muscles;
  • hyperthermia;
  • Strong headache.

In this case, the patient begins to vomit without previous nausea with the development of general hyperesthesia and the appearance of headaches.

Very often, with the development of intracranial hypertension syndrome, which begins with a sharp headache and can occur with a simple turn of the head or with a change in the spatial position of the patient’s body, severe vomiting begins in the morning.

Vomiting can happen in different ways

Nausea is not limited to pregnant women, as many may think at first glance. A similar condition is experienced by women in the absence of pregnancy, men, and children. In this case, unpleasant sensations may pass without a trace or be accompanied by fever, vomiting, and diarrhea.

Depending on the root cause, there are 4 types of nausea:

  • reflex – typical in the presence of inflammation in the gastrointestinal tract (gastrointestinal tract), which irritates the receptors of the celiac and vagus nerves, which transmit a signal to the brain. It manifests itself with ulcers and gastritis in the form of bloating, tingling in the hypochondrium, and a feeling of heaviness after eating. There is also a psychogenic nature, when smells, objects and even associations act as an impulse to a bad state, which indicates the presence of neuroses;
  • cerebral - makes itself felt after brain injuries or diseases occurring in it. Appears at any time of the day;
  • toxic – occurs while taking medications or due to infectious intoxication. Toxic substances affect the vomiting center and trigger zones, which provokes lightheadedness;
  • vestibular – the body’s reaction to changes in body position. It is observed during sudden rises from bed, during boat trips, car trips or rides on attractions.

It is typical during pregnancy and menopause, accompanied by tinnitus, darkening of the eyes and dizziness.

IMPORTANT! Most varieties are treatable; ignoring the phenomenon will only worsen it.

Vomiting in men in the morning

Why do men vomit in the morning?

However, if we are talking specifically about representatives of the stronger sex, then it is worth mentioning purely male reasons for morning vomiting - an alcoholic hangover, and a rather exotic reason, evening drunken sex with an unpleasant woman. Young men just starting their sexual life are especially susceptible to the latter.

Vomiting in the morning in men: causes

As already mentioned, there can be many reasons for vomiting in the morning in men. The main ones are the following:

The causes of vomiting in the morning in men do not always lie in damage to the digestive system. It is often caused by diseases of the brain or its individual centers. Vomiting in the morning can be accompanied by psychosomatic disorders, as well as nervous shock. The same result is caused by severe irritation of the mucous membranes of the mouth, pharynx, intestines, stomach, peritoneum and other organs.

However, the most common cause of vomiting in the morning in men is intoxication as a result of poisoning or infectious diseases. A similar reaction accompanies endocrine diseases, since in this case there is also an accumulation of toxins in the tissues.

Diagnosis of morning vomiting in men

When diagnosing morning vomiting in men, concomitant signs of the disease play an important role. Thus, with infectious diseases affecting the digestive tract, severe nausea first occurs, which then progresses to vomiting. You may also experience headaches, weakness, fever, bowel movements, etc.

Lesions of the vestibular apparatus, in addition to periodic severe vomiting, are manifested by dizziness, hearing impairment, and loss of orientation.

With endocrine pathologies, vomiting is repeated many times, without bringing visible relief. If burning pain in the abdomen is observed along with it, or the patient has previously been diagnosed with diabetes, then he must be urgently hospitalized.

Chronic adrenal insufficiency is characterized by symptoms such as muscle asthenia, fever, sharp severe abdominal pain, disruption of the normal functioning of the cardiovascular system, as well as nausea and vomiting.

Intestinal obstruction is manifested by severe nausea and pain in the stomach. The nature of the vomit depends on which part of the digestive tract the obstruction has formed. Obstruction in the initial sections of the intestine is manifested by a large amount of bile in the vomit, in the thick sections - by the smell and color of feces from the vomit.

If abdominal pain appears along with vomiting, and signs of blood are present in the discharged masses, this indicates bleeding in any part of the digestive tract.

Severe repeated vomiting, nausea, sharp cutting pain in the abdomen may indicate appendicitis or peritonitis. Both of these diseases are very dangerous and require immediate medical intervention.

Treatment of vomiting in the morning

There is no specific treatment for morning vomiting, as it is only a symptom of the disease. Therefore, when it appears, you should consult a doctor to find out the causes of this condition. Only a specialist can choose the appropriate course and method of treatment.

It’s nice to feel a charge of vigor and strength when waking up in the morning! But sometimes you feel nauseous in the morning instead. If there is no reason to blame such a symptom on pregnancy, then you need to understand the reasons for the discomfort. Morning sickness cannot be ignored, as it signals many unpleasant illnesses.

Problems with digestion

Nausea attacks in the morning can have various causes, but in 60% of cases, according to medical statistics, they relate to digestion. Discomfort in the esophagus on an empty stomach is caused by gastritis or ulcers. They are accompanied by hunger pains, heaviness in the stomach, and a feeling of bloating after eating.

Cholecystitis can “color” the morning with nausea and heartburn. They will be joined by pain in the right side of the abdomen during a chronic, protracted course of the disease. The condition will worsen after a rich and fatty breakfast.

If you have a stomach ulcer, you need to pay attention to the pain. Sharp, sudden pain that is difficult to tolerate may indicate a perforation of the ulcer. If you need urgent surgery, call an ambulance immediately!

Nausea along with vomiting, diarrhea, and increased body temperature are signs of poisoning, the result of an infection entering the body.

Treatment

When nausea is caused by inflammation of the appendix, surgical intervention is necessary. In any case, nausea is not a disease, but only a manifestation of the disease. It is possible to find out exactly what needs to be treated only after a thorough examination. At first, to relieve unpleasant symptoms, the doctor prescribes antiemetic drugs, and then begins the main treatment.

Medicines

You can get rid of morning sickness on an empty stomach with the help of Diazepam, Seduxen, Prazepam. You can take pills not only to eliminate, but also to prevent gag reflexes. Doctors recommend these medications during seasickness and air sickness.

The drugs suppress nausea and improve the condition, but in the absence of comprehensive treatment, such therapy gives a short-term effect. Many medications should not be used by children or pregnant women. Therefore, the prescription of drugs, dosage and course of treatment are prescribed only by the attending physician.

Treatment is carried out using dopamine receptor blockers (Cerucal), antipsychotics (Etaperazine, Aminazine), sorbents (activated carbon, Polysorb). For stomach ulcers, antibiotics and antisecretory tablets (Ampicillin, Pariet, Pilobact Neo) are prescribed. Ranitidine and Kvamatel are prescribed as prophylaxis.

ethnoscience

Once the causes of morning nausea in women and men have been determined and drug treatment has been prescribed, it can be supplemented with folk remedies. They will relieve nausea and replace antiemetic medications. If you feel nauseous in the morning, the symptom will be removed:

  • decoction of ginger root (1 tsp of dry plant, pour 250 ml of boiling water, leave for 30-40 minutes);
  • lemon poured with boiling water is a universal remedy that is safe for patients with any diagnosis (including children and pregnant women);
  • a decoction of dry or fresh lemon balm leaves (prepared in a similar way to ginger decoction).

Pregnant women and children are recommended to consume fresh juices daily on an empty stomach - they not only fight nausea, but also saturate the body with vitamins

To stop vomiting after eating:

  • edible mint oil applied to the gums and nasal mucosa;
  • red currant juice;
  • dill tea;
  • potato juice (1 tbsp);
  • apple infusion with honey;
  • peeled burdock rhizomes (3-4 pieces eaten per day are enough);
  • sauerkraut brine (3 tbsp on an empty stomach will normalize digestion and restore intestinal microflora).

IMPORTANT! When vomiting, you need to drink as much water, green or black tea as possible.

Diseases and symptoms

  • severe nausea;
  • profuse vomiting;
  • widespread pallor;
  • lack of oxygen;
  • pain in the upper abdomen.
  • morning sickness;
  • loss of appetite;
  • unbearable pain in the lower right side (radiates to the leg);
  • vomit;
  • temperature increase.

Symptoms that can lead to coma in diabetes mellitus:

  • nausea in the morning;
  • bouts of vomiting;
  • strong thirst;
  • itching in the genital area.

Acute intestinal obstruction:

  • nausea, vomiting;
  • bloating;
  • there was no bowel movement, no gases for 3 days;
  • stomach is hard.
  • nausea;
  • dizziness;
  • sudden jumps in blood pressure;
  • asymmetrical curvature of the face;
  • tongue deviation to one side;
  • decreased strength in the arm on the injured side;
  • inability to lift a limb on the injured side.

According to world statistics, cerebral stroke occurs in the morning in 80% of cases.

The patient should be put to bed before the doctors arrive. It is better not to give medications so as not to blur the symptoms of the disease. In case of severe thirst or high temperature, the patient’s lips and tongue should be moistened with cool water.

Possible diseases

The causes of severe nausea in the morning may be other pathologies that are not related to pregnancy and do not depend on gender, age, or profession.

  • Migraine. The attacks of nausea can be severe, and you can even wake up from them. Nausea does not go away after vomiting. Painkillers and sleep will help.
  • Traumatic brain injury. This is damage to the bones of the skull with microdamage to the brain substance. Disturbances occur in the vestibular zones, causing dizziness, nausea, vomiting without relief, and an unsteady gait. Such changes develop the morning after the injury.
  • Infestation with parasites. Children often suffer from this, but adults can also have parasites in their bodies: liver fluke, tapeworm, pork tapeworm. It is difficult to get rid of such uninvited guests on your own, so it is better to contact a specialist - a parasitologist.
  • Vegetative-vascular dystonia. Additional symptoms are dizziness, hearing loss, vision impairment, anxiety, and increased sweating. A little morning exercise, consisting of gentle physical exercises to activate general blood circulation, helps a lot.
  • Hypertension. Morning sickness is accompanied by pain in the heart, redness of the face, a feeling of pulsation of blood vessels, and high blood pressure. If there is pain in the left half of the chest, a heart attack can be suspected. It is better to put the patient to bed and call an ambulance.
  • Kidney inflammation. With pyelonephritis in the morning, swelling on the face and other parts of the body, changes in the color and smell of urine, itching, and pain when urinating are noticeable.

In old age, it is difficult for the body to fight kidney inflammation due to weak immunity. But rapidly developing pyelonephritis in young people is also dangerous, as it can lead to death.

  • Oncology. Morning sickness is a symptom of many cancers, such as stomach and pancreatic cancer. Another symptom is a complication of chemotherapy.
  • Hypothyroidism. This is a decrease in the production of thyroid hormones. At the same time, metabolic processes are disrupted, which negatively affects the functioning of the entire body. Additionally, a person feels weak, constantly drowsiness, and appetite worsens. Such problems can be corrected with the help of medications.

Preventive measures

Those who experience morning sickness frequently should review their diet by eliminating foods that are difficult to digest. It is especially worth giving up the bad habit of eating such dishes before bed. Alcohol and smoking poison the body, which fights toxic elements through rejection (i.e. vomiting), so addictions also have no place in life.

And so that nausea and headaches no longer bother you, both men and women should follow simple recommendations:

  • eat often, but in small portions;
  • have foods in the refrigerator that prevent nausea (citrus fruits, sour apples, juices);
  • drink at least 2 liters of water per day;
  • regularly ventilate the room;
  • mint candies will help overcome nausea outside the home;
  • sometimes nausea is caused by hunger: in such cases, having breakfast is enough;
  • periodically do “fasting” days;
  • moderate physical activity will tone the body and normalize metabolic processes;
  • If you experience frequent symptoms of nausea, consult a doctor.

Morning sickness may indicate serious pathologies, therefore, if this problem often bothers you and is accompanied by additional symptoms that worsen your general condition, you should immediately see a doctor.

Do not self-medicate under any circumstances (this especially applies to children and pregnant women). Depending on the age, nature and course of the disease, the doctor will select an individual treatment plan aimed at combating not only the symptoms, but also the causes of the disease.

When it's not a disease

Nausea can develop without pathological disorders in the body. This happens to women in the first months of pregnancy. This condition is explained by the production of hormones. In some cases, vomiting is possible. Usually after the third month everything returns to normal. No treatment is needed unless excessive vomiting causes dehydration.

Some people feel sick when they get motion sickness on trains, planes, or vehicles. You need to take medications that alleviate the condition, take sucking candies and water with lemon with you. It is advisable not to eat heavy food before the trip. There are special bracelets against motion sickness syndrome.

Nausea in the morning may be caused by medications. Some drugs have such side effects. If they do not decrease with long-term use, then you should consult your doctor, perhaps the medication will be replaced.

When smoking on an empty stomach in the morning, men experience nausea as a hangover syndrome. If the previous day the dinner was late and plentiful, then in the morning you will feel heaviness in the stomach and other unpleasant symptoms.

Help for an exhausted body

Nausea is always painful, no matter what time of day it appears. It will completely go away along with the cause, the underlying disease that provokes it. But the condition can be alleviated.

  • Move less. This especially applies to patients with migraines, traumatic brain injury, and changes in blood pressure.
  • Eat small portions. Give your stomach a rest. Remove unhealthy foods that irritate your digestive system from your diet and you will immediately feel relief.
  • Provide a flow of fresh, cool air. This will reduce the appearance of unpleasant foreign odors that provoke attacks. Turn on the air conditioner, create a draft in the rooms, take a walk in the fresh air.
  • Keep foods nearby that help relieve nausea, such as citrus fruits, not just the pulp, but also the peel. For women at all stages of pregnancy, pickled cucumbers, tomato juice, and sour apples are good helpers.
  • Use aromatherapy. You need to study your body. Some people find aromatic oils of orange or fir helpful. They can be applied to a handkerchief and taken with you in a car, train, or plane.

Important! It is not recommended to use aromatherapy during pregnancy, even if it helped well before.

  • See your doctor. Morning sickness can develop into a bout of vomiting. It can dehydrate the body. Even a loss of 10% of water can have serious consequences. It is necessary to find out the cause of the unpleasant symptoms and undergo a course of treatment.

During pregnancy

All of the above symptoms can occur during pregnancy. Some are completely safe, others pose a threat to the fetus. Nausea is the first sign of pregnancy after delayed bleeding.

The female body is reconstructed, the level of estrogen and progesterone increases sharply. This process is called adaptation of the mother's body to the fetus. Toxicosis usually ends by the second trimester.

Associated symptoms:

  • decreased appetite;
  • nagging pain in the lower abdomen;
  • swelling of the mammary glands;
  • constant fatigue;
  • increased sensitivity.

It is recommended to include more fresh vegetables and fruits in your diet. Some women give up meat completely. The doctor will prescribe additional vitamin intake so that the body does not lack folic acid.

If a pregnant woman feels nauseous temporarily, it does not harm the health of the mother and child. Walking in the fresh air, weak tea and black bread help relieve attacks. The use of medications during pregnancy is prohibited.

Variants of nausea

The following types of nausea are distinguished:

  • Reflex nausea. Occurs when sensitive fibers from the pharynx, pharynx, esophagus, stomach, bile ducts, peritoneum, mediastinum, genitals and other reflexogenic zones are irritated. This also includes nausea that occurs when the vestibular nuclei are irritated (“motion sickness”).
  • Central nausea. In this type of nausea, signals to the vomiting center come directly from the brain. It occurs with organic brain damage, and can also have a psychogenic origin.
  • Intoxication nausea. It occurs when the concentration of various substances in the blood increases, both from outside (medicines, poisons, alcohol, bacterial toxins, etc.) and products of the body’s metabolism (ketones, urea, protein breakdown products).

The most likely causes of nausea

Based on the considered pathogenesis, it is clear that there can be many causes of nausea, starting from the cerebral cortex and ending with the genitals.

Let's consider the most likely causes of those situations when you feel sick for no apparent reason. It must be said that such situations occur less frequently in men than in women.

Digestive diseases

In diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, nausea is usually not the only symptom:

In addition to nausea, there are other symptoms

  • organic diseases of the stomach and esophagus (peptic ulcer, gastritis, esophagitis, gastroesophageal reflux, foreign bodies of the esophagus, cicatricial stenosis of the esophagus, pylorus and others);
  • functional motility disorders (dyspepsia, gastric paresis, increased pressure in the stomach and intestines, overeating, swallowing air with food);
  • diseases of the liver and biliary tract (cholecystitis, gallstones, dyskinesia);
  • intestinal diseases.

In addition to nausea, there may be:

  • pain of various types;
  • heartburn, belching;
  • feeling of fullness in the stomach, bloating;
  • stool disorder.

Infections

In the case of an acute course of the infectious process, questions usually do not arise: in addition to nausea, there will be other symptoms:

Vomiting is one of the symptoms of infection

  • vomit;
  • fever;
  • diarrhea;
  • manifestations of general intoxication (weakness, sweating, headache).

Nausea as the only symptom can be a manifestation of a sluggish, latent infection, as well as parasitic infestation (for example, giardiasis).

Nervous system lesions

Nausea may be a sign of increased intracranial pressure, brain tumor, or encephalitis. It helps to suspect this particular cause of nausea:

  • presence of headaches;
  • blurred vision (double vision, spots, blurred vision);
  • sensitivity disorders;
  • suffered head injuries.

Intoxication with drugs or other drugs

The most common medications that cause nausea are cytostatics, glycosides, and salicylates. Other drugs may also cause nausea in cases of individual hypersensitivity to them. Nausea as a side effect of drugs is often indicated in the instructions for them.

Disturbance of internal homeostasis

Imbalance in the functioning of internal organs is also a cause of nausea

Excessive accumulation of toxic metabolic products in the blood due to dysfunction of the liver, kidneys, decompensation of diabetes mellitus, and disruption of the thyroid gland.

Vestibulopathy

Nausea that occurs with vestibulopathies:

  • paroxysmal positional vertigo syndrome;
  • Meniere's disease;
  • motion sickness (motion sickness).

Oncological diseases of any location

Especially in advanced stages.

Food allergies

Or individual intolerance to certain foods.

Psychogenic variant of nausea

Psychogenic nausea does not have organic brain diseases

Psychogenic nausea occurs quite often, the mechanism of its occurrence is central, that is, impulses to the vomiting center come from the cerebral cortex. There is no organic brain damage. It may manifest itself:

  • with increased anxiety, especially in stressful situations;
  • for neuroses;
  • like reactive nausea at the sight of certain foods (unpleasant associations).

Chronic Nausea and Vomiting Syndrome (CNVS)

Finally, in the international classification of functional disorders there is a variant - chronic nausea and vomiting syndrome (CNVS) . This is the case when the examination did not reveal any diseases, but the person’s periodic nausea bothers him.

Urges in old age

Due to age-related changes, chronic diseases worsen and the development of new pathologies is provoked. Elderly people feel sick due to poor diet and use of large amounts of medications.

Diseases that cause nausea after 50 years:

  1. Paroxysmal positional vertigo. This is a disorder of the vestibular system that occurs only in older people. This is due to a lack of vitamin D and an inactive lifestyle.
  2. Vestibular neuronitis. This is an inflammation of the nerve that is viral in nature. Attacks can be one-time, the intensity of symptoms changes when changing position and trying to concentrate on one point.
  3. Vestibular headache. This is a type of migraine in which the sense of balance is disturbed, attacks of dizziness and even convulsions appear.
  4. Meniere's disease. Accumulation of fluid in the inner ear area. Manifested by nausea, dizziness and headaches. In this case, the patient's hearing acuity is significantly reduced.
  5. Central dizziness. This is a cerebral circulatory disorder. Often such symptoms appear after a stroke, with ischemia of the cardiovascular system.

All these symptoms are associated with dysfunction of the vestibular apparatus. Diseases are treated depending on age, individual tolerance and the specific case. The doctor may prescribe antidepressants, anticoagulants and other medications to support the functioning of the brain, heart and blood vessels.

During menopause

Age-related changes in women are more acute. There is a lack of estrogen, which affects not only the appearance, but also the internal state. Hormonal medications, herbal and vitamin supplements will help to cope with this problem.

Causes of nausea:

  • hormonal imbalance;
  • drug use;
  • chronic diseases.

Nausea is usually temporary. Only a doctor can choose the right treatment, so using medications on your own is not recommended. Typically, menopausal symptoms go away one year after the last menstrual period.

Mechanism of nausea

Nausea occurs at a subthreshold level of irritation of the vomiting center. Moreover, in our brain there are two areas that are responsible for the mechanism of nausea and vomiting.

The vomiting center itself is located in the medulla oblongata and receives impulses from the fibers of the peripheral nervous system (mainly the vagus nerve fibers and sympathetic fibers).

The second zone is the chemoreceptor zone, located in the bottom of the fourth ventricle of the brain, has a rich network of vessels and is closely connected with the circulatory and liquor systems. This zone has a large number of chemical receptors that react to the presence of toxins, metabolites, and drugs in the blood. Impulses from this zone are also transmitted to the vomiting center.

Nausea is a consequence of irritation of the vomiting center

In the immediate vicinity of the vomiting center are the nuclei of the respiratory, glossopharyngeal, vasomotor and other nerves. Therefore, irritation of this area is accompanied by increased salivation, sweating, increased breathing and other autonomic reactions.

The vomiting center sends signals through motor neurons to the smooth muscles of the walls of the stomach and esophagus, the diaphragm and the muscles of the abdominal wall.

With nausea, the peristalsis of the stomach sharply decreases, it actually “stops”, while the tone of the duodenum and jejunum increases.
